Another fall brings another change to the Viola Rand School. Increasing enrollment at Old Town Elementary School necessitated a transfer of their pre-kindergarten program to the Bradley and Alton elementary schools. Miss Opperman, our second grade teacher, will be teaching second grade at Old Town Elementary this fall, joined there by our second grade students. Marion Talon returns to teach pre-kindergarten at the Viola Rand School again! She and her assistant, Sarah Prokey, will have a morning and an afternoon class with sixteen students in each class. Work has begun on a designated outside play area for the pre-kindergarten students. We are excited to include Mrs. Talon and Mrs. Prokey as new staff members and to have pre-kindergarten students all day!
Another new staff member is Carrie Rand who has been hired to teach kindergarten this year. She comes to us from Old Town Elementary School where she has provided academic support for students through literacy interventions. She is very excited to be teaching kindergarten and has been busy with preparations for her large class this fall!
Vanessa Koch, the Leonard Middle School nurse, will be the school nurse at the Viola Rand School as well this year. Kaitlin Michaud has been hired as an additional speech therapist for the district and our students will be on her case load. RSU34 also hired an additional occupational therapist, Kristi Swartz, who will serve our students as well. I am very pleased to welcome all of these wonderful professionals to our school!
A significant change in RSU34 this fall will be an adjustment to the schools’ hours of operation. We will have minimal impact from this change. Our school will begin 10 minutes earlier and end 10 minutes later. This will be an adjustment for the bus runs, so we ask for patience as we get things down pat. Students should be at school no later than 7:40. The official start time will be 7:50 AM.
There will be a pre-kindergarten open house in the morning on August 26th. Morning students may visit from 8:00-9:00 and afternoon students are invited from 10:00-11:00. It is an opportunity to see the school and classroom, meet the teachers and greet fellow classmates!
Kindergarten and First Grade will have their open house on Wednesday, August 28th from 3:00-4:30 during the Back to School Expo!
New student registrations should be done at the Superintendent’s office at Leonard Middle School, 156 Oak Street, Old Town. The office at the Viola Rand School will be open from 7:00-2:30, August 26 – August 30. We look forward to students returning to school on Tuesday, September 3rd. The school day will begin with the first bell at 7:40 and dismissal will begin at 2:20. Enjoy these last weeks of summer! We look forward to seeing everyone!
