VRS Parent information for Day 1

I hope this message finds you making plans for a fun long weekend before school starts on Tuesday!  I would like  to provide some important information before arrival.  First, information has come through this week that all students will be able to have school breakfast and lunch at no cost until December 31st.  Students will be going right to their classrooms upon arriving at school, which should fall between 7:30 and 7:50 (8:00 for pre-k).

At Viola Rand School, there is not a bus loop, so children will be dropped off at the end of the driveway.  Traffic can become troublesome for student safety for a few minutes at the drop off and pick up times.  For this reason, we ask all school traffic to come down Highland Avenue from the direction of Cram Street so that cars with students will pull up on the school side of the street only.  It is also important that no cars pull into the driveway to let off students.  We will have a teacher at the end of the driveway to supervise the children who have exited vehicles and are heading up the walkway to the school.  These first few days of school, we may have parents who would like to walk their children up to the door.  If that is your plan, would you please park after the driveway on the school side of the street and walk up keeping a close eye on the cars and your children.  Parking your cars after the driveway will enable the school buses and vehicles that need to drop children off quickly to do so.

At the end of the day, we ask for the same traffic pattern, with vehicles coming down Highland Avenue and pulling over to the school side of the road heading toward the Milford end of town.  Teachers will be on duty at the end of the driveway calling children down as cars pull up, so we can keep the line moving smoothly.  This will take more time for the first few days of school until we recognize faces and vehicles, then it will proceed more quickly.  Again, if you need to park and exit your vehicle, we ask that you do that after the school driveway.  Again, please do not pull up into the end of the driveway!

In the effort to reduce the social contacts our staff and students encounter, parents will not be entering the school this year unless by prior arrangement.  Please call the office with questions or information for us.  You are always welcome to come to the door to drop something off or check on something with us.

We are counting on parents to remember to run through the health screening questions every morning with your child.  Those questions are:

Within the past 24 hours, have you had a fever of 100.4 or higher?

Do you feel sick with any of the most common Covid 19 symptoms? (as listed on the pre-screening tool in your child’s paperwork)

Have you been in close contact with anyone who has Covid-19?

Have you travelled outside the state in the last 14 days?

If yes to any of these, stay home and give the school a call.

In addition, you are asked to stay home if you have 2 or more of the less common symptoms.

This is a different type of year that we are commencing, but we are happy that we will have students in school full time!  We will all do our best to make the best of this situation!

Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend!
