OTHS Parent/Student Email Update

Tuesday, March 23, 2021

Good Afternoon!

We hope this email finds you doing well!  Please encourage your student to read their emails.  We do send a copy of this email to them as well.

NEW INFORMATION

Bell Schedule for 2021-2022

We will return to full-year classes next fall, barring any unforeseen circumstances.  We will run a schedule similar to what we did last year - with  6 periods a day and an opportunity to take 8 total classes.  Classes will be approximately 55 minutes long and rotate through the morning and the afternoon.  We will release a bell schedule and rotation later this year.

Course Selections for 2021-2022

This week we will be starting our course selection process for the 2021-22 school year.  We are going to use a new process that gives students and parents a little more time to think about what classes the student should take.  We are using a feature of Infinite Campus called the Academic Planner.  This tool is best viewed using the web version of IC.  Along with the left-hand menu, you will see Academic Planner.  We ask that students wait to start adjusting this until they attend one of our sessions on how to use the planner and hear about courses typically taken during that year.  We will explain the template that is applied to each student and how it can be adjusted.   Sessions will take place during this week and next week.

Students should plan to attend during their virtual day and only need to attend one session.  Sessions will be offered:

Class of 2022  Each Block on March 25, Each Block on March 30, or March 31 @2PM

Class of 2023  Each Block on March 26, March 29, or March 31 @2PM

Class of 2024  Each Block on March 29, Each Block on April 1, or March 31 @2

Sessions will start at the beginning of each block – please be on time.  Each day we will email the class the link for the different blocks.

There is no pressure to decide what courses to take during these sessions.  Students will have until April 9 to finalize their Academic Plans.  At that point, they will be locked.  Parents do have access to see the plan, approve the plan, but they can not change it.  Please work with your student on their plan and email their school counselor with any questions.

There have been some changes in the courses that we are offering, those are reflected in the program of studies.  Here is the link to the current versions of our documents: Program of Studies and Course Offerings.   Please take some time and read through the document.  We have made some changes to our Mathematics and English curriculums and our Early College/Concurrent Enrollment offerings.

Dual and Concurrent Enrollment

We’ve updated our opportunities for students to earn college credit while in High School.  Please take a look at https://tinyurl.com/fsvarpbv and reach out to your school counselor for more information.

Quarter 4 Schedule Changes

Grades close on Friday, April 2nd.  This is a good time to check your student’s grades on Infinite Campus.  While there may be still time to bring a grade up - it is quickly running out.  We will not be holding formal sessions for schedule changes for quarter 4.  Please email your school counselor or Mrs. A. Ketch to make arrangements for a change to your schedule.

Juniors - SAT Testing - Registration Deadline is April 8

The state is not requiring juniors to take the SAT  this spring.  Because of that, juniors who are interested in taking the SAT will need to register themselves.  OTHS will host the May 8th SAT.  Directions can be found at:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gBqbYn6LZlWrhXFSK847stWM6SmjUHGe/view?usp=sharing   Please note, do not create multiple College Board Accounts.  We have copies of login information stored in the guidance office.

OTHS Prom

Last week we emailed senior parents on Graduation activities and Prom.  Senior parents who didn’t get this information should please contact Mr. Gordon.

The Prom is open to all juniors and seniors and their dates.  Prom will be held Saturday, June 12 from 6 PM to 10 PM.  More information to come.

Scheduling - UTC

While we are not ready to sign up for OTHS classes for the 2021-22 school year, UTC is ready to do their enrollment.  Please read the section below that applies to you.  The sooner you complete your registration for UTC, the better chance you have of getting into your program.  Priority is given to: Current UTC students, Seniors, and then Juniors.

General Information:

*Students spend half their day at UTC and half at OTHS, which means you will only be able to take 4 credits with us at OTHS.

*Students earn 3 elective credits from UTC.

*UTC tries to honor preferences for AM vs PM.  Not having a preference can increase your chances to enroll in the program.

Current UTC students:

You can view the video of programs if you choose.  Please complete the form found at: https://tinyurl.com/UTC2021  You must be on track for graduation to continue at UTC.  **You will not automatically be enrolled for UTC next year - you have to sign up with us by completing the form.

Classes of 2022 & 2023:

Please watch the video before you complete the form.  There is a lot of information on the different programs available at UTC.  It is 37 minutes - but is a great snapshot describing each program.  Email your school counselor with any questions and they will work on getting answers for you.  If you are interested in applying for UTC, you must be on track for graduation.  Please watch the video and submit the form as soon as possible.

Math Lab

Math Lab is now being offered from 5 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

If the need increases, we are open to expanding to a third night.

To access this opportunity, students just need to email othsmathhelp@rsu34.org during the support times and they will be emailed a link for a google meets.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. Email should come from the student’s school account.

  2. Students can set up an appointment ahead of time or email during the math lab time.

  3. Students can get help on assignments, classwork or upcoming assessments.

Seniors - Financial Aid

If you need help completing your FAFSA, please email Sue St.Louis at sue.stlouis@rsu34.org.  She will schedule you an appointment with Meredith Lee, our FAFSA specialist.  It is important that you file your FAFSA as soon as possible to make sure that you meet college deadlines.

Acadia Hospital Support Groups

Below is a link for a flyer for some new groups that Acadia is offering that are virtual. There are some geared specifically for eating disorders, LGBTQ+, relationships and positive self-esteem.

Remote for a Day

If your student needs to be home because they have symptoms, but are still feeling well enough to attend remotely - please call the Main Office to approve the change to ‘remote for a day.’  Again, it is NOT enough for the student to call in and tell the Main Office and it is NOT enough for your student to simply tell the teachers.  Those will not be approved and will result in your student being marked absent.
