āļøMaine National Guard Flyover
Below in a press release from the Maine National Guard. We wanted to share it with families in case it was something they woul be interested in viewing in Bangor or another location, using social distancing precautions. We study many topics connected to this event including community helpers, local history, Maine history (including the Maine Bicentennial this year), and the practice of gratefulness.
AUGUSTA, Maine ā The Maine National Guard will honor Maineās front line healthcare workers and essential personnel with a flyover, May 12, over several communities. The flyover will be conducted by a KC-135 aircraft from the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor. This event is part of Operation American Resolve, a nationwide salute to those supporting COVID-19 response efforts.
āThe entire Maine National Guard is honored to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the healthcare workers and first responders who are working on the front lines to combat COVID-19. We are also deeply grateful for those essential personnel diligently working to keep our shelves stocked and families supplied,ā said Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, Maineās adjutant general. āIn addition, it is fitting that in light of the postponing of most Bicentennial activities, weāre able to safely offer Mainers a token of pride in their state heritage.ā
The stateās Bicentennial Parade (Maine 200) was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 16, in Auburn and Lewiston.
"While Maine people are known for their resilience in the face of any obstacle, the courage and compassion of our frontline workers who are serving their fellow citizens every day during these difficult times is second to none," said Gov. Janet Mills. "On behalf of the people of Maine, I want to express my deep gratitude for the service of our frontline workers, and I urge everyone to join with me in pausing to reflect on their many contributions to our state as we see our aircraft flying overhead."
These times may change slightly based on flight conditions. In the case of weather concerns, a potential alternate date of Thursday, May 14 is being planned.
Residents along the flight path should maintain social distancing guidelines during this event, refraining from congregating in large groups to view the flyover. A few seconds of jet noise can be expected as the aircraft passes overhead.
We welcome and encourage viewers to tag the Maine National Guard and 101st Air Refueling Wing on social media in photos and videos of the flyover, and add the hashtags #MEGuardAtWork and #AirForceSalutes.
This community outreach event provides training hours for aircrews and will be conducted at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Work Documentation or Concerns
Each Friday, we take attendance at OTES for the week. In order for your student to be marked as present for the week, we must have documentation of their work. This documentation can come in many forms from online work submission, to pictures, a phone conversation, email, or message. If you have concerns about work completion or if circumstances are making it challenging to complete work, please reach out to your studentās teacher about this as well. We have many resources to support you! Also, if at any time your student makes up work at a later date, please contact the teacher!
šPacket Pick Up
Packets for this past week are still available at OTES starting on Monday, May 4th from 8am-2pm, if you missed this weekās work. On Thursday, May 7th, the next weekās packets will be issued via bus routes and pick up locations. Packets are always available at www.rsu34.org.
šFree Libraries
Our staff members have restocked four free ālittle librariesā where families are welcome to go and take books for their students. These four locations are: 1. Anderson Lane (right in front of the FSS Center located beside the garage) 2. Meadow Lane (right beside the mailboxes as you drive into Meadow Lane) 3. Dow IV at 16 Chapman Street (right beside the shed as you drive into the property) and 4. Governorās Restaurant ālittle libraryā (right in front of the entrance)
We will soon be adding ālittle librariesā at LMS, VRS and Alton Grocery. Please see the image attached for guidance.
š·May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month
With warmer weather on its way, Lyme Disease Awareness Month is here again! Health care providers reported a record number of Lyme disease cases in 2019 (2,079 cases as of January 15, 2020). The 2020 Lyme Disease Awareness Month theme this May is āTick Tock.ā This reminds us to slow down and practice great tick prevention when spending time outdoors. The easiest way to avoid tickborne diseases is prevention. This May, please remember to:
1) Use caution in areas where ticks may be found
2) Wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs
3) Use an EPA approved repellent such as: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus
4) Perform tick checks on yourself and pets daily and after any outdoor activity. Take a shower after exposure to a tick habitat. This is a great opportunity to do a tick check and may wash off any unattached ticks.
The Lyme disease bacterium is passed through the bite of an infected deer tick. For transmission to occur, the deer tick must be attached for 24-48 hours. Find and remove ticks early with frequent tick checks.
In Maine, adults over the age of 65 years and children between the ages of 5 and 15 years are at high risk of Lyme disease. People that work or play outside are also at high risk of encountering infected ticks.
If you are bitten by a tick or spend a lot of time outdoors, make sure to watch for symptoms for up to 30 days after exposure. Also be sure to call your health care provider if symptoms develop. The most common symptom of Lyme disease is a skin rash. This is better known as the ābullās-eyeā rash. The rash usually appears 3-30 days after the tick bite and can show up at the bite site or anywhere else on the body. Other symptoms include fever, headache, and joint or muscle pain. Lyme disease is treatable, and most people recover fully.
Lyme disease is not the only disease that deer ticks in Maine can carry. Anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Powassan are other tickborne infections found in Maine. The number of reported human cases of all four increased in 2019, and all remain a public health concern.
The deer tick is the only species of tick in Maine that can pass the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Still, there are several other species of ticks found across the state. Tick identification is important, especially when removing ticks. There are tick identification resources available to order at the Maine CDC website. Tick identification and testing services are available through the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick ID Lab.
