CHAPTER 104 (GIFTED & TALENTED) SERVICES

Chapter 104 (Gifted & Talented) students are students with special needs.  In our comprehensive program at RSU 34, specially-trained Chapter 104 Resource Teachers at each school oversee services for identified students.  These resource teachers work with all staff to differentiate instruction and provide specialized instruction to meet students' academic, social, and emotional needs.

What is "Giftedness"? Helpful terms.

Gifted Education Programming is a coordinated and comprehensive structure of informal and formal services provided on a continuing basis, intended to effectively nurture gifted learners. (NAGC, 2000).

Gifted learners are "Students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services and activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities" (No Child Left Behind Act, 2002).

Another interpretation, paraphrased from SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted, 1999): "gifted is now seen as asynchronous development across the lifespan, in which advanced cognitive/artistic abilities and a heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm."
